American actor Channing Tatum is set to join the X-Men universe as skilled energized-playing-card-throwing Gambit, a magical mutant who will also star in a solo film.
"X-Men" producer Lauren Shuler Donner named Tatum, the "22 Jump Street" star, as her ideal choice to play the comic book character.
Donner has now confirmed the rumored casting while at the U.K. premiere of "X-MEN: Days of Future Past."
"It is Channing," she told Total Film, before adding why she thinks he's the right choice. "He's a rogue, he's a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau," Shuler Donner explained. "And he can handle the action -- we all know that. I think he'll be great for Gambit. And he's a Southerner too."
Taylor Kitsch played the character in Gavin Hood’s film, "X-MEN Origins: Wolverine."
Gambit is a mutant with the ability to control kinetic energy, turning items into explosives and throwing them as weapons.
Created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee, Gambit made his comic book debut in 1990 and has been featured in several "X-MEN" animated series and video games.
