At least 1,299 private elementary and secondary schools were allowed to increase their tuition fees this coming school year 2014-2015.
The Department of Education (DepEd) has approved the application of 1,299 schools out of 1,477 private elementary and secondary school that applied for tuition fee increase.
DepEd said that 178 schools were denied due to their failure to comply with DepEd requirements.
The number of schools could still go up before classes open in June as four more regions have yet to submit their reports, DepEd added.
The region with the most number of private elementary and secondary schools that raised tuition are Western Visayas (Region 6) with 311, Ilocos Region (Region I) with 246, Central Luzon (Region III) with 244, National Capital Region with 172 schools.
DepEd has not yet released data from Region VII (Central Visayas), Region XI (Davao Region), Cordillera Administrative Region and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.
Last year, DepED allowed 903 out of 1,068 private elementary and secondary schools to raise their tuition fees.
