According to Saudi authorities, hundreds pilgrims were killed and injured on Thursday (September 24, 2015) in a stampede at Mina, outside the Muslim holy city of Mecca, where some two million people are performing the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
The deaths occurred around 9 a.m. on the first day of Eid al-Adha, one of the holiest holidays in the Muslim calendar. It was the second major incident this year for hajj pilgrims, after a construction crane collapsed on September 11 at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, killing at least 111 people and injuring 394 others.
