FIBA Asia first-timer Palestine stunned 2013 silver medalist Philippines, 75-73, in Group B action of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship on Wednesday, September 23 at the Changsha Social Work College Gymnasium in Changsha, China.
Jamal Abu-Shamala led Palestine with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Sani Sakakini added 22 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and two steals. His brother, Salim Sakakini, scored 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Three Palestian players played the full 40-minute game. Abu-Shamala, Sani Sakakini and Imad Qahwash, who contributed with 17 points.
Former NBA player Andray Blatche posted a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds for Gilas Pilipinas. Terrence Romeo had 11 points on 4 of 13 shooting, while Jayson Castro was the only other Filipino to score in double figures with 10.
The Philippines started the game strong, leading by as many as 16 points in the first quarter. They still held a sizeable lead in the fourth period, 71-62, with less than five minutes to play but failed to hold on and the relentless Palestine taking a 73-72 lead with 1:38 remaining after back-to-back three-pointers from Abu-Shamala.
The Philippines or the Gilas Pilipinas is ranked 31 in the world by FIBA while Palestine is unranked.
