Gilas Pilipinas displayed a team effortf, came down from 10 down to upset defending champions Iran, 87-73, in the second round of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship on Monday, September 28 in Changsha, Hunan, China.
Jayson Castro also known as Jayson William, the best point guard in Asia, shot 11-of-18 from the field to post a game-high 26 points. Naturalized big man Andray Blatche, who sprained his ankle against Japan, still played and finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds.
Terrence Romeo added 15 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
Calvin Abueva contributed 13 points, 6 rebounds and a steal plus relentless aggressiveness and mind games resulted in Iran's 7-foot-2 behemoth Hamed Haddadi fouling out with under 4 minutes to go with a regular foul and a technical for complaining.
Mohammad Nik Khahbahrami led Iran with 21 points on 5-of-8 triples. Haddadi was limited to just 10 points and 7 rebounds.
Veteran guard Mahdi Kamrani finished the game with 11 points and 3 assists.
It was Gilas' first win against Iran since the 2011 Jones Cup. It was also Gilas' first win against Iran in the FIBA Asia Men's Championship since the Middle East power rose to the top in 2007.
Iran fell to 3-1 record as Gilas caught up with same win-loss record in Group E.
The Philippines has a chance to take the No. 1 spot in Group E when it clashes on India on Tuesday, September 29 at 2:30 pm.
