The Provincial Government, the Department of Education (DepEd) of Albay and representatives from different regions of the Philippines are all set to kick off the 2016 Palarong Pambansa on April 10 at the Albay Sports and Tourism Complex in Legaspi City.
With the theme "Transforming Communities, Transcending Through K to 12," a total of 21 sports (17 annual events and 4 demonstration sports) will be played in this year’s Palarong Pambansa, the 59th edition of DepEd's annual multi-sporting event.
Among the sports events to be contested in are archery, arnis, athletics, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, football and gymnastics.
Athletes in both elementary and secondary level will also participate in softball, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, lawn tennis, volleyball.
Also, there will be four demonstration sports—billiards, futsal, wrestling and wushu.
More or less 15 thousand delegates from 18 regions are set to see action in this year’s Palaro, which will run from April 10 to April 16.
Last year, the country's biggest annual school sports event was held in Davao del Norte. National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) won the overall titles in both elementary and secondary divisions. NCR dominated the 2015 Palaro, winning 98 gold medals, 67 silvers, and 71 bronzes for a total of 236 medals.
Southern Tagalog Calabarzon Athletics Association (STCAA: Region IV-A ) and Western Visayas Regional Athletics Association (WVRAA: Region VI) are expected to provide strong challenge to NCR as they finished second and third, respectively, in the 2015 Palarong Pambansa medal tally.
This year’s host region, Bicol Regional Athletic Association (BRAA: Region V), finished tenth place overall last year.
