The Department of Transportation (DoTr) has announced that the state-run Philippine National Railways (PNR) will implement its first fare increase in over two decades starting July 1, 2017.
From P10, the minimum fare for the first 14 kilometers will go up to P15 while an additional P5 would be charged for every succeeding seven kilometers which is due to the adjusted fare structure from P0.71 per kilometer to P1.07 per kilometer.
"The fare increase now is expected to raise additional revenue for the maintenance of existing rolling stock, tracks and operating stations," according to PNR.
The fare hike was based on a December 2014 PNR board resolution.
The PNR has six trains servicing to 45,000 passengers daily connecting Tutuban station in Manila to Calamba station in Laguna province, south of Manila.
