President Duterte signed into law the free tuition bill for tertiary education

President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act or the full tuition subsidy for students in State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), local universities and colleges (LUCs), and state-run technical-vocational schools on August 3, 2017, following a meeting between lawmakers and economic managers in Malacañang.

Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra made the announcement on August 4 during a press conference.

"I am pleased to announce that last night, August 3, 2017, the President signed into law the enrolled bill," said Guevarra.

Despite Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno on Tuesday saying that the budget requirements of the bill would set back the government by a significant amount and only middle-class and upper-class students would benefit from the bill, Duterte weighed things and said long-term effects of education would outweigh any budgetary problems.
