The Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas gets a chance to represent the Philippines as a wildcard in the 2017 FIBA Asia Champions Cup in Chenzhou-Hunan, China on September 22 until September 30.
In a report by FIBA, Japan club SunRockers Shibuya withdrew its participation due to conflict of schedule, and the Philippines got the wildcard spot to play in the Asian club championship for professional basketball.
The ten Asian club teams are divided into two groups. The team Chooks-to-Go will be joined in Group A by BC Astana of Kazakhstan, Mono Vampires of Thailand, PetroChimi of Iran, Sarreyyet Ramallah of Lebanon.
Group B on the other hand is composed of China Kashgar, Al Riyadi of Lebanon, Dacin Tigers of Chinese-Taipei, ONGC of India, and Al Shabab Al Ahli of the United Arab Emirates and the Top 4 of each team will advance in the knockout play.
Philippines has participated five times, earning bronze once and bagging gold 4 times with teams Northern Cement (1984), Swift PABL (1988), Andok’s (1995) and Hapee Toothpaste (1996).
Head Coach Chot Reyes has already confirmed participation, however, Gilas Pilipinas team manager Butch Antonio says that PBA players will not be included in the team that will compete in the said event.
"We’re assembling the team from the expanded Gilas pool. PBA players will not be included here," said Antonio, according to Philstar Global.
TV5 will broadcast the event, while Sports5.ph will provide an online live stream.
