The Magnolia Hotshots overcame a 20-point deficit to beat the San Miguel Beermen 105-103 in Game 1 of 2018 PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
Hotshots came out firing in the fourth quarter, going on a 13-0 run to start the period led by Ian Sangalang and rookie Rob Herndon, to cut the deficit to 89-88 with 7:20 left to go in the game.
Paul Lee, who struggled with only four points but had eight rebounds, tied the game at 97-97 with 3:25 left. Raffy Reavis, Mark Barroca and Sangalang combined for eight points in the end game to steal the game.
Sangalang scored 14 points of his career-high 29 markers in the payoff period to go with nine boards. Aldrech Ramos added 15 off the bench. Mark Barroca and Rome Dela Rosa chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively. Herndon contributed all his eight points in the last quarter.
Jio Jalalon tallied seven points, four rebounds and four assists. Reavis, who blocked Arwind Santos' game-tying attempt, finished with 6 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks.
The San Miguel was limited to 14 points in the final period after scoring 33, 30, and 26 points in the first three quarters and build a 20-point lead, 72-52, in the third period.
June Mar Fajardo led the Beerwen with 31 points and 18 boards but committed 11 turnovers. Alex Cabagnot had a near-triple-double of 27 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Marcio Lassiter and Santos had 21 and 19 points, respectively.
Magnolia's second unit outscored the Beermen's bench, 47-1. The Hotshots controlled the offensive boards, 23-14, and had a 33-14 advantage in second chance points.
Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is on Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena.
